On the 29th of September, Renewtec visited the Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN) in Petten.
The visit was part of the bioSNG technology inventory Renewtec AB is doing on behalf of an industrial client. The MILENA gasification process, the OLGA tar removal, and the ESME methanation were discussed in detailed and updates on the Alkmaar demonstration project (ambigo) were given.

The OLGA unit removes the tars above the water dew point. In this way the water can easily be removed by condensation without any contaminants in form of tars.
With 165 participants from 24 countries REGATEC 2016 set a new all-time-high record in terms of participants.
The conference was opened by the Governor of Scania, Margareta Pålsson and the president of the European Biogas Association, Dr. Jan Stambasky.
28 exhibitors, 25 oral presentations by leading biogas, gasification and Power-to-gas experts and 41 posters made REGATEC 2016 the ultimate meeting point for stakeholders interested in renewable methane.
The interest in REGATEC 2016 is huge and the event will be the largest biogas, gasification and Power-to-gas conference in Sweden during 2016.
The conference will be opened by the Governor of Scania, Margareta Pålsson, followed by a presentation by the President for the European Biogas Association, Dr. Jan Stambasky.
REGATEC 2016 has a truly international character and 60+ leading experts will highlight the latest advances, which in combination with a large exhibition provides excellent opportunities for networking and to find new collaboration and business partners.
The 3rd Conference of the European Biogas Association takes place 27-29 September in Ghent, Belgium.
EBA is looking for scientific presentations (oral and posters) on all conference topics, both from academia and the industry and the call for papers is open http://biogasconference.eu/programme/call-for-papers/
Oral presentations and posters will be evaluated by the Scientific Advisory Council (SAC) of EBA, consisting of acknowledged experts in anaerobic digestion and gasification technologies
Papers can be delivered on all conference topics: biogas and syngas production, biomethane production, circular economy, sustainable raw materials, digestate, biorefineries and future markets.
The SAC will evaluate the proposals based on their relevance to the topic, innovation of the concept and quality of presentation (both scientific evidence and oral skills). Upon peer review the SAC reserves the right to decide about oral or poster presentations where appropriate.
In total 1394 people from 76 countries participated in the conference. Notable was the huge interest for biogas, biomethane and gasification but it’s no surprise since gaseous biofuels have several advantages over solid and liquid biofuels.
Renewtec acted as session chairman for the session “Thermochemical Conversion Processes – Industrial Approach” and represented the European Biogas Association in the the conference closing cermony.
“According to Dr Held, we should not speak about biomethane from AD, biomethane from gasification or from any other technology separately, but about biomethane from renewable resources as a whole, which is a chance for Europe to increase energy security, have cleaner environment and stimulate growth. AD and gasification play together in one team as complimentary technologies.”
The 7-8 May 2nd International Conference on Renewable Energy Gas Technology, REGATEC 2015, took place in Barcelona, Spain. The fundamental idea of the conference is to provide a common platform for biogas, gasification, and Power-to-gas players since there are strong synergies between these sectors.
In total 140 people from 26 countries registered for the conference which was opened by Dr. Nakada from the world organisation on renewable energy, IRENA.
The president of the European Biogas Association, Dr. Jan Stambasky, seized the opportunity to launch the association’s new ”EBA vision and mission”. Now the association takes a holistic approach to renewable energy gases, whether they are produced through anaerobic digestion or gasification, which is in line with the fundamental idea of REGATEC.
During the two day conference 64 presentations by leading experts were given, and 17 exhibitors showed the latest within anaerobic digestion, gasification and Power-to-gas.
SEAT and Iveco Spain displayed the new generation of environmentally friendly gas powered cars with superior fuel economy. SEAT Mii Ecofuel consumes merely 2.9 kg/100km which gives a fuel cost of approx. 5€/100km in Sweden and approx. 2.90-3.60€/100km in the rest of Europe.

REGATEC 2015 was sponsored by Cortus Energy AB, EQTEC Iberia, EBIOSS Energy, GDF Suez, JTI, Landvärme GmbH, and Schmack Carbotech GmbH.
REGATEC is organized by Renewable Energy Technology International AB (Renewtec AB) and Institute for Biogas, Waste Management & Energy
The 21st of October EQTEC Iberia SL in Parets del Vallés outside Barcelona was visited by Renewtec. EQTEC Iberia markets its proprietary fluidized bed gasifier adopted for agricultural feedstock and forest residues.
Luis Sanchez Angrill, CEO at EQTEC Iberia in discussion with Jörgen Held. EQTEC Iberia has together with EBIOSS Energy Group signed up as Gold Sponsor of REGATEC 2015.
The day after, the 22nd of October, Institut de Recerca en Energía de Catalunya, IREC, was visited. The mission of the Catalan Instutite for Energy Research is to contribute to the sustainable development of society and increase corporate competitivness via
innovation and development of new technological products
medium and long-term research
development of scientific and technological knowledge in the field of energy

A consortium of eight EU Member States and Associated Countries, including the UK, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland, is implementing an ERANET Plus activity entitled Bioenergy Sustaining the Future (BESTF). This activity provides funding to collaborative bioenergy projects that demonstrate at least one innovative step and will result in demonstration at a pre-commercial stage.
The Swedish/German BioProGReSs project is one of out three projects supported by BESTF. The project partners are Gothenburg Energy (coordinator), Chalmers University of Technology, Technical University of Berlin and Renewtec AB.
The goal is to develop, implement and demonstrate advanced syngas cleaning based on chemical looping reforming in both a pilot and an industrial scale bioSNG plant. In addition a novel measuring technique developed at TU Berlin will be tested and implemented in order to monitor and control the gasification process.
BioMil and Renewtec have together conducted the project “Small scale gasification” (in Swedish). Within the framework of the project the biomethane production cost based on gasification and methanation of woody biomass has been calculated for two plants with a capacity of 5.6 MWth and 33 MWth and with and without district heating integration.
The study shows a production cost in the range of 6.40-12.20 SEK/Nm3 biomethane (approx. 70-130 eurocent) depending on the investment support of the Swedish Energy Agency, choice of interest rate, fuel cost and if the excess heat can be utilized or not. Additional cost reduction is possible if the separated carbon dioxide can be used, e.g. as carbon dioxide enrichment in greenhouses.
The project has been financed by Region Skåne, Region Halland, AB Gas & Värmeteknik, AGA Gas AB, BioMil AB, DGC, E.ON Gasification Development AB, Highterm Research AB, Lunds Universitet, NSR AB, O2 Bio AB, Purac Puregas AB och Renewtec AB.
27 speakers, including 4 plenary speeches, 24 poster presentations and 30 exhibitors make REGATEC 2014 to the largest gasification and biogas conference in Sweden during 2014.
The evaluation gave REGATEC 2014 a high mark (~excellent) but there is still room for improvements regarding the exhibition and the poster session that we will address at the next REGATEC taking place 7-8 May 2015 in Barcelona.
A big thanks to our gold sponsors, NAWARO Bioenergy Park Güstrow, China National Environmental Protection Corporation, Cortus Energy AB and MicrobEnergy GmbH, our silver sponsors, Gasum Oy, Kraftringen AB and Landwärme GmbH as well as all exhibitors, speakers, poster presenters and participants.
